Moving Tips for People Moving to Arizona

Relocating to Arizona is an exciting transition that comes with its unique considerations. From desert weather to expansive landscapes and bustling metro areas, planning can help ensure your move is smooth. With AmeriFreight Car Shipping’s experience in vehicle transportation, here’s how to best prepare for your move to the Grand Canyon State.

Planning your transportation

Coordinating the shipment of your car is a significant part of any move. Arizona’s terrain and climate make reliable vehicle delivery a must.

  • Transit times may vary depending on your destination, especially when heading to rural or remote areas.

  • According to DOT regulations, personal belongings are not allowed inside vehicles, though some carriers may permit a small number of items for an added fee.

Preparing for the climate

Arizona is famous for its hot, dry climate. Summer temperatures regularly climb past 100°F, especially in the southern regions.

  • Keep lightweight, breathable clothing on hand and stock up on sun protection.

  • Make sure you have efficient air conditioning in your home or temporary housing.

  • Visit the Arizona Department of Commerce for seasonal climate insights and tips.

Understanding the cost of living

Arizona’s affordability depends on the region. While smaller towns offer lower costs, popular cities like Scottsdale and Phoenix can be more expensive.

  • Expect higher rates for housing, transportation, and utilities in metro areas.

  • Include all vehicle shipping costs, deposits, and initial setup expenses in your moving budget.

Securing housing and employment

Get a head start on your relocation by securing a job and a place to live before you arrive.

  • Check out Arizona’s leading industries, such as healthcare, aerospace, and tourism, through local job platforms.

  • City housing markets can be competitive—plan early and consider working with a licensed real estate agent.

Navigating Arizona’s accessibility

Arizona is car-centric in many areas, though cities like Phoenix and Tucson offer limited public transportation options.

  • Rural areas often require a personal vehicle to get around.

  • Plan your driving routes if you’re unfamiliar with desert or highway travel.

Knowing state regulations

Once your vehicle arrives, you’ll need to register it with the Arizona Department of Transportation.

  • Be sure to check for emissions requirements depending on your county.

  • If you bring pets, firearms, or oversized equipment, consult state guidelines for proper documentation and permits.

Getting involved in the community

Settling into a new place is easier when you feel connected.

  • Explore Arizona’s many festivals, outdoor events, and cultural gatherings.

  • Join neighborhood groups or community centers to meet locals and ask for recommendations.

Staying safe

Arizona has its share of natural risks like wildfires, extreme heat, and seasonal monsoons.

  • Keep an emergency kit with water, non-perishables, and basic medical supplies in your home and vehicle.

  • The Arizona Department of Health Services is an excellent resource for emergency preparedness and health information.

Managing finances

Keep your finances organized as you transition.

  • Set up banking in your new location and monitor all expenses from moving services to everyday essentials.

  • Create a realistic budget that includes one-time costs and recurring bills.

Using professional moving and relocation services

Hiring professionals can make a long-distance move far more manageable.

  • Full-service movers help with packing, loading, and setup.

  • Relocation firms can assist with temporary housing and service activation.

  • AmeriFreight Car Shipping ensures your vehicle is shipped safely and delivered on time.

  • Our flexible vehicle transport solutions can also benefit businesses relocating employees or equipment.

Amazing experience, shipping my pride and joy from CA to FL

Shipped a sports car and passenger car from CA to FL using AmeriFreight and Top Notch Carrier LLC. I ordered a 2 car enclosed transport to guarantee my vehicles would not be moved but 2 days before transport, I was offered a soft enclosed full size transport. I was reluctant at first but Rosie from Amerifreight was able to arrange it with the driver (before I agreed to change the transport order) assuring my cars would be placed in a spot where they would never be moved during the journey at which point I decided to go with them. I am sure glad I did. This was an amazing experience. The Alex (the owner/driver from Top Notch Carrier LLC) and I spoke every day along the route which was very professional of him. He was extremely careful loading and unloading the cars and had all the right equipment making sure no parts of the car would scrape during that process. He was very thorough during the inspection process which was reassuring as well. It was also reassuring to see he had other exotics loaded on his truck. Rosie at AmeriFreight was super helpful and very professional in setting this all up. As this was my first time shipping cars my particular experience and the people I dealt with were exceptional and the the entire experience couldn't have gone any better. The price was very affordable as well. It wasn't that much more than having to drive across country factoring in wear/tear, gas, lodging etc. I can't say enough good things about Alex and Top Notch Carrier LLC. He is a straight shooter and very trustworthy person in my opinion. I would highly recommend him. Thank you both for making what for me was a bit of scary experience absolutely flawless.

Parks

The state of Arizona is full of green and wooded lands, perfect for camping and hiking and, in the winter, skiing through the powdery white snow. If you travel to Northern Arizona, you'll find beautiful pines and plateaus you thought you would only ever experience in a movie theatre. Red rocks and valleys span the central zone, while in the south, you'll get to see stunning rock formations above and below ground. With these multiple landscapes, Arizona provides a rich nature experience.

A wooden walkway winding through a green park. The walkway is made of weathered planks and has several benches along the side. Tall trees line the path, and there is a grassy area to the left of the walkway.

Native American Lands

Beyond its astounding scenery, Arizona also holds a rich Native American Community. They were the first inhabitants of the area, arriving more than 12,000 years ago. Today, Arizona has 22 Native American Tribes inhabiting its forests and deserts. If you plan to visit them, be aware of road conditions and the weather to avoid accidents or extreme temperatures. If you're more comfortable with a less hands-on approach, you are able to learn about the tribes in museums, such as the Heard Museum in Phoenix.

Rocks, Mountains, and Forests

As you've read, Arizona's geography has beautiful mountains and rocks, such as the Grand Canyon, and unique pine-filled forests. Don't miss the Superstition Mountains for walking or watching, Mount Lemmon for snowboarding, or the South Mountain Park at sunset, for hiking, mountain biking or skiing. There are more than 190 mountain ranges across the state that provide spectacular views and experiences along the way.

Top Tourist Attractions

  • Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is one of the most popular tourist destinations in America and the most popular in the state of Arizona. The Colorado River, which can be seen in the depths of the canyon, is an enormous natural marvel that can't be missed when visiting the state.

Sedona is one of the most picturesque landscapes in Arizona, surrounded by gorgeous red rock mountains. Sedona is perfect for a day trip, although many visitors prefer to stay for longer periods of time.

The sandstone buttes across the valley are some of the most recognizable pictures of the Southwest. Sand dunes, stone spires, and buttes are seen all across this region, which is located on the border between Arizona and Utah.

  • Phoenix

Phoenix is a fantastic starting point for discovering Arizona, but it's also a popular winter destination for those who just want to relax at a resort or spa and spend a little time soaking up the desert heat.

  • Hoover Dam

One of the great engineering wonders in America is the Hoover Dam. This incredible construction connects Arizona and Nevada through the Colorado River. It was finished in 1935, and measures 1,244 feet long and 726 feet high.

Transportation

Transportation across the state is relatively easy. For road-tripping, highways are in pretty good condition and offer excellent services and beautiful views and landscapes along the way.

If you want to take public transport, taxis, Uber, or charter services are available in major cities. For smaller towns, we recommend car renting.

If you're a train lover, the Valley Metro Rail is perfect for running from central Phoenix through downtown and east. You can also get to different tourist attractions such as museums and centers.
