What Is Texas Car Shipping?

Texas car shipping is a service that transports your vehicle to or from the Lone Star State using a licensed, professional carrier — without you having to drive it. A carrier picks up your vehicle at your specified location, loads it onto an open or enclosed trailer, and delivers it to your chosen destination anywhere in the contiguous U.S.

AmeriFreight Auto Transport matches you with a vetted carrier network of FMCSA-licensed carriers to find the right match for your vehicle, your route, and your timeline — at no upfront cost. One dedicated agent manages the process from estimate through delivery. No payment until you have reviewed and accepted a carrier offer.

Texas generates more vehicle shipping activity than almost any state in the country. The most common reasons include:

→ Professional relocations — Texas's booming technology, energy, aerospace, and financial sectors generate consistent inbound professional relocation volume, particularly into Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth, Austin, and San Antonio.

→ Military PCS orders — Fort Cavazos (formerly Fort Hood), Fort Sam Houston, Fort Bliss, Lackland Air Force Base, and Dyess Air Force Base all generate consistent year-round PCS-driven vehicle shipping demand.

→ Oil and energy industry moves Texas's energy sector drives frequent professional relocations between the Permian Basin, Houston's energy corridor, and other states.

→ University relocations — UT Austin, Texas A&M (College Station), Texas Tech (Lubbock), University of Houston, TCU (Fort Worth), Baylor (Waco), and others generate consistent student vehicle shipping demand.

→ Online and auction vehicle purchases — Texas's large dealership network and significant auto auction activity generate buyer-to-home shipping demand.

→ Snowbird moves — Texas draws seasonal residents from colder northern states seeking warmer winters, particularly in the Rio Grande Valley and Gulf Coast areas.

Texas's Shipping Landscape:

Texas's sheer size creates car shipping complexity unlike any other state. At 268,000 square miles, a shipment across Texas can rival the distance from the East Coast to the Midwest. Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin, Fort Worth, El Paso, and the Rio Grande Valley are all served by different carrier corridors. West Texas and the Panhandle are more rural and can involve longer pickup windows than major metro areas. AmeriFreight Auto Transport agents are experienced with Texas's regional differences — from high-frequency carrier runs along I-10 and I-35 to the longer lead times that rural West Texas and far South Texas can require.

How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Car to or From Texas?

Shipping a car to or from Texas with AmeriFreight Auto Transport typically costs between $500 and $2,035, depending on distance, transport method (open or enclosed), and carrier availability at the time of your shipment. Short routes from neighboring states (Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arkansas, Louisiana — under 600 miles) typically run $500–$750 for open transport. Long-haul cross-country routes (Texas to California, New York, or the Pacific Northwest) typically run $1,000–$1,500. The estimates below are based on distance bands and typical market conditions. Contact an AmeriFreight Auto Transport agent for a current quote on your specific vehicle, route, and dates.

What Affects the Cost of Car Shipping in Texas?

DISTANCE: The dominant pricing factor — and in Texas, especially significant. At 268,000 square miles, your origin city within Texas matters. A Houston-origin shipment to New York travels roughly 1,600 miles. An El Paso-origin shipment to New York travels roughly 2,100 miles. When getting an estimate, your specific Texas origin city is as important as your destination.

TRANSPORT METHOD: Open transport is the most widely available and cost-effective option for most Texas routes. Enclosed transport provides additional protection from weather and road debris — on Texas's desert corridors (I-10 through West Texas, I-20 through the Permian Basin), open carriers in summer can be exposed to extreme heat, dust, and road debris. For classic, luxury, or temperature-sensitive vehicles, enclosed transport provides meaningful additional protection on these corridors.

VEHICLE SIZE AND TYPE: Texas has one of the highest concentrations of trucks, full-size SUVs, and large pickups of any state. Larger vehicles occupy more carrier space and cost more than standard sedans. Dually pickups and lifted trucks may require specific carrier types — confirm vehicle dimensions and modifications at time of estimate.

SEASONAL DEMAND: Texas sees elevated shipping demand in summer (professional relocation peak) and year-round energy sector activity keeps certain corridors (Houston, Midland, Odessa) consistently active. Hurricane season (June–November) can occasionally affect Gulf Coast corridor timing.

ROUTE ACTIVITY: I-35 (North–South, Dallas to San Antonio to Laredo) and I-10 (East–West, Houston to San Antonio to El Paso) are the state's primary carrier corridors with excellent availability. Rural West Texas, the Panhandle (Amarillo corridor), and the Rio Grande Valley may have fewer carrier options and longer pickup windows.

TIMELINE FLEXIBILITY: Standard service allows carrier assignment within a typical window. Expedited service prioritizes your shipment for faster carrier assignment at an additional cost. Expedited service does not guarantee a specific delivery date.

The Most Cost-Effective Way to Ship a Car to or From Texas

Open transport is the most cost-effective option for most vehicles. Open carriers operate at higher frequency on Texas's main corridors than enclosed carriers.

→ Choose open transport unless your vehicle requires enclosed protection.

→ Be flexible on the pickup window — a 5–7 business day window gives your agent more carrier options.

→ For rural Texas origins (West Texas, Panhandle, deep South Texas), allow a wider pickup window — carrier frequency is lower in these areas.

AmeriFreight Auto Transport does not require any upfront payment to get an estimate.

How It Works

Texas Car Shipping by City — Local Knowledge Across the Lone Star State

Texas is not one car shipping market — it's several. Shipping a car in Houston's Energy Corridor is a completely different logistics challenge from a pickup in West Texas oil country or a delivery to a Rio Grande Valley retirement community. AmeriFreight Auto Transport has coordinated vehicle shipments across every region of Texas for more than 20 years.

Houston — The Energy Capital and Biggest Texas Shipping Market

Houston is the largest car shipping market in Texas and one of the most active in the country. The city's combination of energy sector employment, one of the country's busiest port systems, strong international trade ties, and a massive metropolitan footprint creates enormous vehicle shipping volume in both directions.

Houston's sheer scale is both an advantage and a challenge for carrier logistics. On the positive side, I-10, I-45, I-69, and the Beltway system provide excellent carrier access — carrier frequency into and out of Houston is among the highest in the country. On the logistical side, Houston's sprawl means that a 'Houston' shipment can originate from The Woodlands, Sugar Land, Katy, Pearland, or Pasadena — each requiring different routing. Your agent will coordinate pickup at the most carrier-accessible location for your specific part of the metro.

For residents in high-rise buildings downtown, the Galleria area, or Midtown Houston, carrier trucks may need to use a nearby accessible meeting point — a wide commercial street or parking facility where loading can be completed safely.

Dallas and Fort Worth — The DFW Metroplex

Dallas and Fort Worth together form one of the largest metro areas in the country, and one of the most carrier-active markets for Texas vehicle shipping. I-35W, I-30, I-20, and I-635 provide strong carrier access throughout the Metroplex. Most residential pickups and deliveries in suburban DFW areas (Plano, Frisco, Allen, Southlake, Arlington, Irving) can typically be coordinated with Door-to-Door Service (Location Permitting).

In Dallas's urban core — particularly the Uptown, Deep Ellum, and Downtown Dallas areas — carrier trucks may require a nearby meeting point due to street restrictions. Your agent will confirm logistics for your specific address. Fort Worth has generally good carrier access given its more spread-out layout and proximity to I-20 and I-30.

San Antonio — Military Hub and Thriving City

San Antonio is one of the most active military vehicle shipping markets in Texas. Fort Sam Houston, Lackland Air Force Base (Joint Base San Antonio), and Randolph AFB generate consistent PCS-driven vehicle shipping demand in both directions. San Antonio's established residential layout and strong I-35, I-10, and I-37 access generally allow Door-to-Door Service (Location Permitting) throughout most of the metro.

Austin — Tech Hub and Fast-Growing Market

Austin's rapid tech industry growth — Apple, Tesla Gigafactory, Oracle, Dell, Samsung, and dozens of major employers — generates some of the highest professional relocation vehicle shipping activity of any Texas city. Austin's terrain also adds logistics considerations: the Hill Country topography around certain neighborhoods and the city's rapid residential expansion into suburban corridors (Pflugerville, Cedar Park, Round Rock, Dripping Springs) create variable carrier access depending on your specific area.

El Paso — The Border City

El Paso's position on the US-Mexico border, its proximity to New Mexico, and its significant military presence (Fort Bliss is one of the largest Army installations in the country) create distinct vehicle shipping dynamics. El Paso is accessible via I-10 from the east and west — carrier frequency on the I-10 corridor is reasonable, though less frequent than on higher-volume Texas metro routes. Shipments to and from El Paso may have slightly longer pickup windows than Dallas or Houston.

West Texas, the Permian Basin, and the Panhandle

West Texas's energy boom has driven significant vehicle shipping demand — oil and gas workers relocating to Midland, Odessa, and the broader Permian Basin frequently ship vehicles when taking employment in the region. Carrier access in West Texas is lower than in major metro areas — expect longer pickup windows and the possibility of meeting point coordination at the nearest accessible highway corridor.

The Panhandle (Amarillo and surrounding region) is accessible via I-40 and I-27. Carrier frequency here is lower than on Texas's major south-central corridors, and pickup windows may be extended relative to Houston or Dallas.

Rio Grande Valley and South Texas

The Rio Grande Valley — McAllen, Harlingen, Brownsville — is a growing shipping market driven by retirement relocations, cross-border business activity, and seasonal residents. Carrier access is good along the US-83 and US-281 corridor, though pickup windows may be longer than in the major metro areas. Your agent will confirm timing specifics for the Valley.

Popular Texas Car Shipping Routes — Estimates and Transit Times

AmeriFreight Auto Transport coordinates vehicle shipments between Texas and destinations across the contiguous United States. The routes below represent the most frequently requested origins and destinations. Estimates vary by vehicle type, season, and carrier availability. Use the form above or call (770) 486-1010 for a current estimate on your specific route.

NOTE: Because Texas is a large state, estimates can vary significantly based on your specific Texas city of origin or destination. Always request an estimate using your actual ZIP code for the most accurate figure.

Open vs. Enclosed Car Transport in Texas — Which Is Right for You?

Texas’ Most Popular Choice: Open Transport That Delivers Value

Open car transport is the most widely used and cost-effective method for Texas routes. Your vehicle is loaded onto an open multi-vehicle carrier and transported without enclosure. Open transport offers the highest carrier availability on Texas's main corridors — I-10, I-35, I-45, I-20, I-37 — and the most competitive estimates in both directions.

Open transport is the right choice for most everyday vehicles, PCS vehicles, standard trucks and SUVs, and university moves. It is the standard option for the vast majority of Texas car shipments.

Premium Protection for Texas Drivers: Enclosed Transport for Your Most Important Vehicles

Enclosed car transport places your vehicle inside a fully enclosed trailer, providing additional protection from weather, road debris, dust, and heat exposure throughout transit.

Texas-specific reasons to consider enclosed transport: classic and collector vehicles crossing West Texas's desert I-10 corridor where extreme summer heat, dust, and road debris are exposure factors; luxury and exotic vehicles in Houston's energy sector or Dallas's corporate corridor; high-value vehicles being moved to or from the Permian Basin where road debris from heavy truck traffic is a consideration; and military vehicles for commanders and senior officers at Fort Cavazos, Fort Bliss, or Fort Sam Houston where vehicle condition is a priority.

Enclosed transport costs approximately 30–50% more than open on equivalent Texas routes and involves fewer carriers.

Large Trucks and Non-Standard Vehicles in Texas

Texas has one of the highest concentrations of full-size trucks, dually pickups, lifted vehicles, and extended-cab configurations of any state. Carriers must account for the additional size and weight of these vehicles — this can affect both the estimate and carrier matching timeline. When getting an estimate, confirm your vehicle's exact configuration — lifted height, dual rear wheels, extended bed length — so your agent can match the right carrier for your specific vehicle.

Why Choose AmeriFreight Auto Transport for Texas Car Shipping?

AmeriFreight Auto Transport has been coordinating car shipments to and from Texas for more than 20 years. We match customers with a vetted carrier network of FMCSA-licensed carriers — managing the search, vetting, and coordination from estimate through delivery. Here is what separates AmeriFreight from the alternatives for Texas customers.

No Upfront Payment Until You Choose a Carrier

Most auto transport services charge a deposit the moment you book. AmeriFreight Auto Transport charges nothing until a carrier has been matched to your shipment, you have reviewed the full offer, and you have accepted it — including the pickup window, estimated delivery timeframe, and total cost. We do the work first. You make the decision second.

A Vetted Carrier Network — With Texas Route Experience

Every carrier we match you with holds active FMCSA operating authority and carries federally required cargo coverage. For Texas shipments, our agents factor in Texas-specific logistics when selecting a carrier: Houston metro sprawl and carrier pickup routing, El Paso border corridor specifics, West Texas rural access windows, and large-vehicle carrier capacity for Texas's high concentration of trucks and oversized pickups.

Texas Coverage — Major Metros and Rural Corridors

AmeriFreight Auto Transport coordinates shipments from Texas's major metros — Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth, San Antonio, Austin, El Paso — as well as from smaller cities including Midland, Odessa, Lubbock, Amarillo, McAllen, Corpus Christi, Waco, and more. For rural West Texas, the Panhandle, and far South Texas, we coordinate meeting points and pickup logistics proactively so you know what to expect before booking.

Why Texas Is One of the Busiest Car Shipping Markets

What This Means for Your Car Shipment

Texas has one of the largest populations in the country, with more than 29 million residents and over 11 million households spread across major metro areas and fast-growing suburbs. Large cities such as Houston, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio generate frequent relocation activity tied to technology, energy, and manufacturing industries. This sustained movement helps make Texas car shipping one of the most active vehicle transport markets in the United States.

Several major interstate highways help carriers move vehicles efficiently across the state and beyond. Interstate 10 runs east to west from the Gulf Coast through Houston and San Antonio toward Arizona and California. Interstate 35 connects the Dallas–Fort Worth metro area through Austin and San Antonio and continues north to Oklahoma and the Midwest. Interstate 45 provides a direct link between Dallas and Houston, one of the busiest in-state vehicle transport routes. A common shipment route, for example, moves vehicles between Dallas and Austin along the I-35 corridor.

Relocation demand is also influenced by large military installations, major universities, and continued job growth across technology and energy sectors. In more rural regions of West Texas or the Panhandle, carriers may coordinate pickup locations along major interstate corridors to maintain efficient routes.

Extreme summer heat and occasional severe storms can influence vehicle transport logistics during certain times of the year.

AmeriFreight Auto Transport works with vetted, fully insured, and FMCSA-registered carriers who regularly service Texas routes year-round, helping provide dependable scheduling. Demand typically increases during peak summer relocation season and year-end moves, which can influence timing and pricing.

If you are planning Texas car shipping, understanding these major transport corridors can help set realistic expectations.

Frequently Asked Questions About Texas Car Shipping

Shipping a car to or from Texas with AmeriFreight Auto Transport typically costs between $500 and $2,035, depending on distance, transport method (open or enclosed), and carrier availability. Short routes from neighboring states typically run $500–$750 for open transport. Long-haul cross-country routes (Texas to California or New York) typically run $1,000–$1,500. These are estimates. For a current quote on your specific vehicle and Texas city, use the estimate form on this page or call (770) 486-1010.

Transit times typically range from 2 to 10 days depending on distance and route. Routes from neighboring states (Oklahoma, New Mexico, Louisiana) typically take 2–3 days. Mid-distance routes (Texas to Georgia or Tennessee) typically take 3–5 days. Cross-country routes (Texas to California or New York) typically take 5–8 days. These are estimates — carrier scheduling, route conditions, and seasonal demand can affect actual timing

Yes — significantly. Texas is the largest state in the contiguous U.S. A Houston-origin shipment to New York travels roughly 1,600 miles. An El Paso-origin shipment to New York travels roughly 2,100 miles — a 500-mile difference. When requesting an estimate, always use your specific Texas ZIP code to get the most accurate figure for your actual origin or destination city.

No. AmeriFreight Auto Transport does not require any payment until you have chosen a carrier. After your agent finds a carrier match, you receive the full offer — pickup window, estimated delivery timeframe, and total cost — before any payment is processed. You accept the offer first. Payment follows.

Large auto transport trucks reach up to 80 feet in length. In Houston's high-rise downtown, Midtown, and Galleria areas, and in certain dense urban neighborhoods in Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio, carrier trucks may not be able to safely access residential streets or building loading areas. Your agent will coordinate a convenient nearby meeting point. For most suburban Texas addresses — which represent the majority of Texas pickups — Door-to-Door Service (Location Permitting) is available without meeting point coordination.
