  • Carlsbad Caverns National Park

  • White Sands National Monument

One of New Mexico's most beautiful settings, White Sands National Monument, is only a half-hour drive from Alamogordo in the state's southern region. Here, 60-foot-tall dunes continually being moved by the wind have formed out of the white sand, creating visually appealing patterns.

The world's biggest hot air balloon festival, attended by more than 80,000 people each fall in Albuquerque, is held there. The festival began in 1973 in a parking lot with only 13 balloons and has expanded to fill a 365-acre park with more than 500 balloons.
