How to ship a car from Copart

9k=

Moving a vehicle from a salvage auction requires careful timing and documentation. Unlike standard dealership purchases, Copart operates on strict schedules where delays lead to immediate storage fees. Following these steps will help you clear the yard efficiently and protect your investment.

Step 1: Copart Membership and Bidding Power

Before bidding, check your membership level and documentation. Copart offers Guest, Basic, and Premier tiers. Basic members are limited to $2,000 unless they deposit 10% of their desired limit. Premier membership is better for high-value or multiple purchases, offering up to $100,000 in daily buying power.

Every state has different laws regarding who can buy salvage vehicles. If you lack a dealer or dismantler license, you may be restricted to specific inventory or need to hire a broker to facilitate the purchase and subsequent release to a transporter.

Step 2: Financial Settlement and Auction Fees

The logistics clock begins the second the auction ends. Most facilities provide a three-business-day window to pay for the vehicle before a $50 late fee is applied to each lot. Your account must show a zero balance before a vehicle is released. A typical invoice includes the bid price, buyer fees, a $79 to $95 Copart gate fee, and a $10 environmental fee.

Paying via wire transfer or ePay is recommended to save time and reduce member fees. While credit cards are fast, they often result in higher overall costs.

Even instant digital payments can take 24 to 48 hours to fully clear and update the vehicle status to "Cleared for Pickup" in the yard's digital system. If payment is not completed within eight calendar days, the vehicle is relisted with a penalty of 10 percent of the final bid or a minimum of $600.

Step 3: Salvage Car Transport Equipment and Logistics

You must determine the necessary salvage car transport equipment based on the vehicle condition and auction icons. Look for designations like "Run and Drive" or "Starts." A vehicle labeled as a non-runner will always require a winch-equipped carrier. Winching services typically add a carrier surcharge of $50 to $150 to your shipping cost.

For vehicles with severe suspension damage, missing wheels, or those labeled as stationary, the yard will use a forklift to load the asset. This requires a specialized flatbed carrier because standard multi-car trailers cannot accommodate forklift tines.

If you are shipping an electric vehicle, only standard transport options are available. There are no hybrid-equipped carriers for EVs, so you must rely on standard open and enclosed trailers. Ensure your transporter is familiar with the Copart Transportation App to join a virtual queue before arrival, which is mandatory at many high-volume locations.

Step 4: Copart Gate Pass Authorization and Transporter PIN

Once the vehicle is paid in full, you must authorize the release of the asset. In your member portal, you will find a four-digit digital Gate PIN. Use the system to email the exact Lot Number and Gate PIN to your driver. Without this PIN, the facility will not permit entry.

Most yards stop loading by 4:30 PM local time. If your driver arrives later, they will be turned away, potentially pushing the Copart delivery into a new day of storage fees. These storage penalties generally range from $20 to $50 per day after the initial grace period.

Step 5: Vehicle Condition Reports and Auction Pickup

Salvage auction vehicles are sold exactly as they sit, making the documentation at the yard your only defense against new transit damage. The driver must document every existing dent, scratch, and missing part on the Bill of Lading before the vehicle is loaded. Comparing a pre-bid condition report to the driver's Bill of Lading at pickup ensures no new damage occurred while the car sat in the storage row.

If you plan to pick up the vehicle yourself, driving a purchased vehicle off the lot is strictly prohibited. All vehicles must be loaded onto a trailer, and you must wear a high-visibility safety vest and closed-toe shoes.

Buyers often ask carriers to transport extra parts inside the vehicle. The Department of Transportation (DOT) does not permit personal items to be shipped in vehicles. If allowed by a carrier, it is usually for an extra fee and must be discussed beforehand.

Step 6: Salvage Title Management and Delivery

The physical salvage title is managed separately from the vehicle and often requires a Limited Power of Attorney to be on file. Titles can be mailed via USPS or FedEx.

To have a title released to a third-party transporter or mailed to an address other than your registered one, you must have a notarized Limited Power of Attorney on file. Some states allow for digital signature of this document.

Outpacing the Facility Fee Schedule

Successfully arranging Copart shipping logistics depends on your ability to outpace the facility fee schedule. By prioritizing secure payment methods, verifying vehicle condition icons early, and ensuring your transporter is equipped with the correct Gate PIN and winch capabilities, you can mitigate the risk of storage penalties.

Always remember that the Bill of Lading is your most important piece of evidence. Treat the condition report at delivery as your final opportunity to verify the integrity of your investment.
